Left Third: this is the left side of the magazine, it displays the most important information such as the date, price, issue date and some articles that the magazine contains.
The Masthead: the masthead is the title of the magazine, this can be in various fonts and colors depending on the genre and target audience the magazine is aimed at.
Puff: this will be located to the left or right third of the cover, it is the bright image that attracts the attention of the customer, usually in an advert or special offer.
Plug: the plug links in well with the puff, it is simply the writing or text that is placed next to or inside the attractive image.
Convention: the convention is the predicted image of what you think the cover will look like. For example, for a men's magazine, you would expect it to contain information on cars, football and girls. It is the expected conventional appearance of the front cover.
Code: the code of a piece of text or image is the message the picture or text is portraying; it is collecting and predicting the inside information that the image or text doesn't tell you.
Font: this is the style of writing on the cover. The font of text can say a lot about the target audience of the magazine, for example, if the text were to be swirly and soft then you would assume it was a feminine based magazine, whereas if the font on the masthead was bold and blunt then you would assume it was a masculine magazine.
Center third: this is the middle strip of the front cover. this usually contains an image, usually a man or woman depending on the magazine. the center third would quite often hold an image that the magazine is based on.
Footer: this is a headline or important title that is positioned at the bottom of the front cover.
Header: this is similar to the footer, however the important title or headline is positioned at the top of the page. The header is usually used more than the footer.
Genre: the genre is the category of the magazine, whether it is masculine, feminine, sci-fi, musical or home design, comedy and drama. there are many more genres than the ones given.
Graphic: any illustrative element in a page layout,such as a photograph, illustration, icon, ruled line or any other non-text element.
Italic: a type of font that slants to the right. this is to put emphasis on titles of magazines and books etc.
Landscape: a page that is horozontially orientated, opposed to portrait which is vertically oriented
Page layout: the assembly of elements on a page, including text and graphics, also called page composition or page layout.
